The Brit is back in business as iconic pub becomes creative hub

The first phase of regeneration of a central Scunthorpe nightspot is complete, with two businesses moving into newly created commercial space.

Keystone Architecture and Know Media are first to the bar at Britannia House, with the former the business of Jon Bayley, who has taken on the lease of the prominent building.

The distinctive pub on the junction of High Street and Frodingham Road closed its doors for the final time as the curtains came down on 2018.

Originally opened as a traditional ale house in 1907, it had been expanded to embrace the  changing evening economy over the years.

Now it has been overhauled in what is a first venture into commercial property management for Mr Bayley, an award-winning architect

Plans are in place for a bar and restaurant, The Black Door, but the remainder is a new business hub, which aims to attract a creative community in a central location.

Mr Bayley said: “It has taken some work to get to this stage, we are trying to balance retaining character without looking like a divided up nightclub. There are a few traditional elements, quirky bits that will catch the eye, and it is something different from a stale office environment.

“It will be creative, ideal for people fed up with the same – we’re trying something different.”

Keystone and Pete Hewes’ video production operation are in the first two offices, with two more ready to move in.

“We are just starting phase two, which is another three four-person offices and a meeting room as well on the second floor,” he said.

“We’re flexible. What we are trying to do now is get people in early and see what they want. “It could be three separate offices, the total amount of space or two thirds of it.”

First tenant, Pete Hewes of Know Media, said “The fact is, North Lincolnshire – and Scunthorpe in particular – is alive with possibility right now.
