For the fourth EXCHANGES we are excited to partner with Viscose Journal for a special event on Saturday 29 October exploring their current issue, which deconstructs the notion of ‘Asias’ through fashion.
Co-edited by London-based writer and director Cheuk Ng, the magazine seeks out stories deep within fashion’s global supply chain and reflects on the porous communities of fashion producers and consumers around the world that may self-identify as “Asian.”
Focusing on the regions bordering the South China Sea, it includes contributors from over 10 countries as well as their global diasporas, contesting the idea of Asia as a singular idea, image, and even place.
The EXCHANGES event at CFCCA will explore the making of the issue, with a conversation between Cheuk Ng and two of the issue’s contributors, VeniceW and Joni Zhu; a screening and showcase of some of the featured artists and designers including Yat Pit, Joyce Ng, and Samuel Gui Yang, plus a participatory workshop focusing on the meaning of craft in textiles.
A pop-up exhibition of works and screenings from 1pm will accompany:
1.30-2.30pm: Artist talk, featuring Cheuk Ng, Joni Zhu, VeniceW, and Joyce Ng
3-4.30pm: Drop in craft workshop led by creative practitioner Kelly Quinzel
As the Centre for Chinese Contemporary Art undergoes a period of transformation and growth we have initiated EXCHANGES, a series of public programmes to make space for artists and communities. EXCHANGES refers to the movement of people, places, ideas, materials, emotions, memories, resources, possibilities, and hopes. EXCHANGES will metabolise collective energies and reflect creative ideas, contributing to a forum of communal expression. They are fluid spaces for togetherness that also embrace differences.
