Class Dynamics in Contemporary British Television Comedy with Dr Laura Minor

13 November @ 6:30 pm - 7:45 pm

Free

Join us for an evening with Dr Laura Minor, Senior Lecturer in Television Studies at the University of Salford, as she examines how working-class women are changing British television comedy.

Shows like Sophie Willan’s Alma’s Not Normal, Lucy Beaumont’s Hullraisers, and Daisy May Cooper’s This Country have broken through traditional barriers, bringing working-class female voices to mainstream screens. These programmes represent more than entertainment; they challenge the middle-class dominance that has historically shaped TV.

The lecture addresses key questions about representation and power in contemporary media. How do working-class women secure commissions in an industry traditionally dominated by privileged voices? What choices do they make to ensure their stories connect with audiences whilst staying authentic to their vision? How do they build support and advocate for change beyond the screen? Dr Minor provides insights into these strategies, showing how these creators use comedy to challenge who holds power in British television.

Whether you’re a student, industry professional, comedy fan, or simply curious about how television shapes our understanding of class and gender, this lecture offers valuable perspectives on how British culture is changing.

The event takes place on 13 November from 18:30 to 19:45 at Chapman 4, Peel Park Campus, University of Salford. Located just outside Manchester city centre, the venue is easily accessible by public transport, with parking available on campus. The room is fully accessible.

This lecture is presented as part of the Cultures of Class network at the University of Salford, which brings together researchers, practitioners, and communities to explore class dynamics across media, arts, and heritage sectors. The event is free and open to all, though booking through Eventbrite is recommended to secure your place.
