Double doughnut news as both Dunkin’ and Tim Hortons eye new city centre sites

Two of the world’s leading coffee and doughnut brands are eyeing up new sites in the heart of Manchester.

Both Dunkin’ Donuts and Tim Hortons have lodged planning applications to take over vacant sites in the city.

If plans go ahead, the two businesses will be a stone’s throw from one another in the city centre.

Dunkin’ has applied to take over the old Fatso’s sandwich shop at 77 Piccadilly, just off Piccadilly Gardens.

The American fast food brand opened its first city centre site on Deansgate back in February, where its had queues out of the door from day one.

The doughnut chain first launched in 1950 in Massachusetts and is rapidly expanding across the UK, also opening in Bury just before Christmas.

Alongside their famous Boston creme and strawberry frosted ring doughnuts, Dunkin’s menu features doughnuts like Lotus Biscoff crumb, rocky road and Munchkins (mini bite-size doughnuts).

A short walk away, if approved, will be the first city centre branch of Canadian coffee company Tim Hortons.

The fast food joint, famed for its bitesize Timbits doughnuts, coffees and breakfast sandwiches, is hoping to take over a former retail unit on the corner of Market Street and High Street.

The site at 107 Market Street was previously home to Jessops, a photography company.

Tim Hortons has 27 outlets across the UK, including in Salford, Altrincham, and on Oxford Road, with plans also lodged to open a doughnut drive-thru in Stockport.

The company opened its first UK site on Bury New Road in 2017, with customers queuing up as early as 2am to claim the free food on offer that day.
